According to California law, most convicted sex offenders must register their addresses with the state once a year, and when they move, for the rest of their lives. Those convicted of violent sex crimes are required to register with the state every 90 days. If a convicted sex offender becomes homeless or transient, they are required to re-register with the state every 30 days. What is Megan's law?If convicted of certain sex crimes, you are required to register as sex offender with law enforcement. In 2004, Megan's Law was passed by the California Legislature. It allows the public access, via Internet, to detailed information on sex offenders who have been required to register: California's Megan Law sex offender locator site. Megan's Law is named after seven-year-old Megan Kanka, a New Jersey girl who was raped and killed by a known child molester who had moved across the street from the family without their knowledge. All states now have some form of a Megan's Law for sex offenses.
